Which colour should I choose for my wedding?

Wedding Colours > Which colour?
Sunday, 29th July 2007

Some brides know what colours they want for that Special Day – if you are one of those who have no idea yet keep reading for some ideas.

With the greater colour choice for brides in modern bridal designs choosing the colours for your wedding can be more complex. Whereas White and Ivory co-ordinate well with all colours if your gown is Gold or Pink or even Green or Grey the choice could be more of a headache!

Try thinking about the season and feel you want for your wedding. Colours that look great in summer sunshine can look washed out in winter, while a formal wedding lends itself to classic combinations and an informal wedding can have more ‘wacky’ colours.

Brides commonly choose 3 colours for their wedding, 2 main ones and an accent. These can be used in every part of the ceremony and reception or just as elements, go with what you want but don’t let keeping to your colour choice become stressful!

The suggestions I have chosen are grouped under seasons, as with any ideas remember the choice is yours.

Spring

Lends itself well to fresh colour combinations:

  • Yellow, Green and Pink:

  • Sky Blue, Lilac and Ivory:
  • Gold, Purple and White
  • Gold, Cappuccino and mint green
  • Mocha, Pink and Champagne:

  • Mint Green, Yellow and Royal Blue
  • White/Ivory, Fuchsia and Aqua:

  • Peach, Orange and Yellow
  • Aqua, Royal blue and cream

Summer

Use classic combinations and vibrant colours:

Autumn

Take inspiration from the changing colours in nature:

  • Chocolate, Orange and Red
  • Gold, Cappuccino and Orange
  • Brown, Cream and Coral:

  • Purple, Turquoise and Navy:

  • Pick any 3 shades of brown:
Long satin dress with trailing sash in chocolate and latte
  • Burgundy, Latte and Champagne
  • Emerald, Ivory and Mint green
  • Orange, Brown and silver
  • Peach, Mocha and Claret:

  • Purple, Pink and Green

Winter

Here you could go for ice colours, make sure they are crisp though, or warm darker colours

Each of the colour combinations can have a multitude of effects depending on the shade of colours you choose, after all we all know that blue comes in a huge range of shades as do many of the other colours I have chosen.

I wouldn't say latte and canary are 'bad' colours, assuming you mean cream and deep yellow? I do however think they are quite similar so it might help to introduce another shade such as orange or Apricot if you want the colours to be similar. Just touches of it here and there, like a bridesmaids sash or a mix of cream yellow and apricot roses?

We are actually in the middle of adding swatch images to all our dresses. If you look at a particular Forever Yours or Mori Lee bridesmaid dress on our site, you will see a little icon next to it that looks like a pallet of colours. If you click that you get to see all the available colours for that particular dress.

I think chocolate and peach would make a great combination! You could have the bridesmaids in peach with a chocolate sash and the men in a brown suit with peach cravats. Then continue the theme with cream and peach flowers with the addition o chocolate feather or twigs?

My wedding is June of 2011, I'm having cobalt blue bridesmaid dresses but I can't decide on what colours for the flowers. I was thinking either white&yellow or bright pink. What do you think?

I love cobalt/royal blue with yellow for a spring wedding, pink would be good for a summers day and white would be classic all year round. Do you have an favourite flowers? You could look at the colours they are available in to help you decide.

I am getting married in late February 2010. Do you think that black and blue is a good colour combination? Whiach should be the dominant colour, black or blue?

As long as the blue is either royal, turquoise or baby so it contrasts with the blask I think it will work. Personally I think keeping the main colour as the black with a sash and bouquets in blue would be great if your bridesmaids are adults.

[p]For the reception try mixing the 2 so alternate chair sashes or each table alternating between blue and black./[p]

i'm getting married in october this year with the following colors in mind: peach, orange and yellow. which do you think should be the dominant color, and which should be the accent? thank you!

I would suggest using the Orange as this could link well to anAutumn theme. So Burnt Orange bridesmaids dresses with sash or accessories in the peach or yellow and then, if you are having them, chair sashes alternating with the three colours would look great. Mixed bouquets for the bridesmaids and perhaps all deep orange for you.
